A Pennsylvania computer programmer made at least one mistake and, if convicted criminal charges, definitely a second. First, he fell for a sham online dating scheme designed to humiliate him. Second, he allegedly to use his software programming skills to seek revenge.
Bruce Raisley, 47, of Monaca, Penn., is facing 10 years in prison for allegedly creating a botnet to launch highly disruptive distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against such sites as Rolling Stone and Radar magazines, the Rick A. Ross Institute and Perverted Justice, the group that assisted NBC’s Dateline snare adult men trolling Internet chat rooms for underage women.
Raisley surrendered to the FBI in Newark and was charged Tuesday (June 30, 2009) in U.S. District Court of New Jersey with computer fraud and abuse. If convicted, he could face as long as 10 years behind bars.
