Computer Associates, better known for its storage and network management software, announced Tuesday it is entering the business process management business.

The company, based in Islandia, N.Y., on Tuesday released new software, called CleverPath Aion 10, that enables both IT and business users to define, implement, monitor and manage business processes.

The software includes functionality for workflow implementation and management as well, which includes human-to-human, system-to-human and system-to-system interactions, officials said.

Computer Associates International Inc. has for some time offered different facets of business process management functionality through its rules engine.

This latest version of CleverPath brings those capabilities under one umbrella, combining a new BPM (business process management) module with the existing BRE (business rules expert) module.

Overall, the CleverPath suite supports business process optimization with capabilities for business rules automation, business activity monitoring through dashboards, and business intelligence.

The BPM module brings in process management, business rules management and BAM capabilities—all enabled by a workflow engine that supports process orchestration using Web services.

The BRE module adds rules development with both object-oriented and component-based deployment capabilities.

It has the ability to support thousands of chained rules and complex dependencies, officials said.

At the same time, a change management functionality lets users change business processes without changing running business processes.

The two modules are currently available in English editions.

This spring, the software will be available in Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Simplified Chinese editions.
