Seagate Technology has released a new line of Barracuda desktop hard drives designed to use up to 50 per cent less power than standard desktop hard drives.
The Seagate Barracuda LP (Low Power) hard drive family is one of the major product launches the company has planned for the year, and it’s the first time it’s expanded the Barracuda family to include a whole new product family, said Anne Haggar, product marketing manager at Seagate Technology.
With more interest in green technology, the new green desktop hard drives are aimed at three specific markets — the low-power PC market, external storage and SOHO NAS. Those markets are less interested in high-performance and more interested in really low power requirements, quiet running and, in the case of external drive vendors that would use the hard drives, shock tolerance.
"These are growing markets, and that’s exactly who we’re targeting," Haggar said.
