Desktop migration specialist Versora on Aug. 8 released an updated version of its Progression Desktop software, a tool that helps users to transfer files and settings from their Windows system to a Linux system.

The most significant new features in the update, according to the company, are the addition of “full support” for Microsoft Office (including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) to OpenOffice 2.0 migration; enhanced system setting migration functionality; increased file security; and file spanning that enables virtually unlimited data transfers.

Sporting a “click-next-next-finished”-style wizard to guide the user, Progression Desktop migrates data, system settings and application settings from Windows desktops to Linux distributions that include SLED 10, Ubuntu, Xandros, Linspire, Fedora, Mandriva, Red Hat Desktop, SUSE and MEPIS, a Versora spokesperson said.

In June, Xandros became the first distribution to integrate Progression Desktop into the Premium Home edition of its system, the spokesperson said.

The new Progression Desktop version 2.0 also includes “full support” for localization in “any” language, fulfilling international partner requests for a Windows-to-Linux migration solution in their native languages, according to the company.
