Kodiak Networks announced Jan. 4 that it has signed a global licensing agreement with Research In Motion to feature several mobile applications, including push-to-talk, on BlackBerry handsets.

Under the agreement, RIM will integrate a Java version of the Kodiak handset client with BlackBerry devices. The companies will also work together on development and marketing efforts.

“We strongly believe that RIM’s product innovation combined with market-focused solutions from Kodiak sets a new benchmark for converged, smart devices in the mobile marketplace,” Timothy Hall, vice president of strategic alliances for Kodiak Networks, said in a statement.

San Ramon, Calif.-based Kodiak’s PTT application is available on the BlackBerry Pearl device, which is offered by Cingular Wireless. The application offers BlackBerry Pearl users an array of features such as:

  • Availability: Allows users to view the status of their business colleagues and see if they can receive a wireless call
  • Call me alerts: Using the PTT button, a business professional can notify others that they need to talk to them
  • Convert to cellular: Allows BlackBerry Pearl users to convert an individual or group PTT to a standard cellular call or instant mobile conference call by using the PTT button
  • “RIM has an excellent reputation for creating compelling products that address the unique requirements of the mobile professional,” Andy Seybold, leading analyst of Outlook4Mobility, said in a statement.

Kodiak’s application also allows BlackBerry Pearl users to record and send out voice message to individuals or several voicemail boxes without ringing their phones.

With the application, users can control which contact and group lists they can join, and they can accept voice calls and other PPT calls during a PPT session.

“Teaming up with Kodiak to power these devices with unparalleled voice service capabilities is extremely exciting for all segments of the wireless market,” Seybold said.

The companies have not yet announced when they will begin product integration.
