Large enterprises generate an almost unfathomable amount of data. While this creates great opportunity for solution providers to offer backup and disaster recovery services for these clients, it also introduces a problem – backing up, replicating and securing these huge data stores. It is incredibly inefficient and costly.

Traditional solutions back up all of a customers’ data at set intervals, introducing redundancy. Sepaton’s new DeltaRemote software, available May 30, leverages the vendor’s DeltaStor deduplication software to eliminate redundancy in customers’ data before it’s backed up, says Steve Bagby, senior director of product planning and engineering for Sepaton.

By replicating only relevant changes to a backup or disaster recovery site, the software makes more efficient use of storage capacity and shrinks backup windows by reducing the amount of data that’s backed up, he says. In fact, Bagby says, a solution that includes deduplication can lower bandwidth requirements by as much as 97 percent, and greatly accelerate the replication and migration of large enterprise customers’ data to remote sites, making backup much more efficient and less costly.

In addition, since backups are completed much more quickly, there’s a lower risk for data loss or corruption during the backup process.

“DeltaRemote lets our solution provider partners send large data packets over a LAN connection and replicate that data off site,” Bagby says. “By using deduplication, bandwidth utilization is increased and only new, unique data is replicated instead of transporting redundant data, which is inefficient,” he says.

Bagby says solution providers can offer the new software package to their large enterprise customers that need to replicate data from a primary data center to a disaster recovery site, as well as customers that are large enough to need cross-replication for disaster recovery among multiple sites.

He adds that Sepaton will make the solution available through the vendors’ own network of solution providers as well as partnering with storage and data center heavyweights like Hewlett-Packard to deliver the solution through their channel.
Since the solution can essentially eliminate tape handling, the potential for tape failures, data loss and theft and data corruption are slashed dramatically, he says.

DeltaRemote provides Web-based access into the entire solution, including the replication capabilities, Bagby says. The solution also includes load-balancing features in the event of a storage node failure to quickly get businesses up and running in the event of a disaster.

In addition, solution providers can use reporting features to deliver up to 90 days of bandwidth trend analysis to customers, helping them better understand usage requirements.

“This feature can also show customers where bottlenecks are occurring, and better analyze how they can reduce those, or, if necessary, when to update their LAN/WAN,” Bagby says.
