Oracle is taking a hard stance against data warehouse competitors Teradata and Netezza by teaming up with Hewlett-Packard to market an integrated hardware database appliance.

Unveiled at Oracle World this week, the HP Oracle Database Machine’s Exadata Storage Server supports up to 12 terabytes of raw storage data and leverages InfiniBand connectivity. Oracle CEO Charles Phillips believes the appliance gives Oracle a strong competitive stance against rivals in data warehousing, but says it’s introduction doesn’t signal the world’s third-largest software company’s desires to enter the hardware market.

"If you look at IBM, they sell a lot of different hardware configurations but they actually don’t package it in this way, they don’t have anything directly comparable to this. In storage, everybody has some sort of storage, but none of them have the offloaded query processing,” Phillips said.
