Although the overall trend in enterprise storage IT is clearly moving toward smaller, faster 2.5-inch solid-state drives, plenty of shops still use the older 3.5-inch variety, and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is determined to keep supplying that market.

Hitachi on Sept. 19 said that its 3.5-inch Fibre Channel Ultrastar 400S single-level cell SSDs, co-developed with Intel, are now shipping in Hewlett-Packard-3PAR F-Class, T-Class and the new P10000 V-Class storage systems for enterprise and cloud data centers.

The Ultrastar SSD400S line uses enterprise-grade NAND flash, its own proprietary endurance firmware and power-loss-management techniques, Hitachi said. It also features advanced data integrity IT based on industry standards to ensure compatibility in multi-tiered SSD/HDD system designs, the company said.

The new SSDs have been documented to reach up to 516MB per second read and 458MB per second write throughput using 6G bps SAS connectivity, Hitach said. They also have been clocked at 390MB per second read and 340MB per second write throughput with 4G bps FC, the company said.

The new drives also deliver up to 41,000 read and 21,000 sustained-write IOPS for fast access to hot enterprise data for improved productivity and operational efficiency.

Hitachi GST is currently shipping its Ultrastar SSD400S drives in volume. The product line features a five-year limited warranty.
