Google, VMware Partner for Cloud Development, Portability

Google is partnering with VMware on what the companies are calling cloud portability – technologies that make it easy for Java developers to use their standard tools to develop web applications.

The partnership falls under the Google App Engine for Business, a set of technologies that enable companies to create and deploy their own applications on the same infrastructure that hosts Google Apps. In addition, the infrastructure includes management and support features for the enterprise, according to Google.

Google says the new capabilities for business include the following:

• Ability to manage all the apps in an organization from one place,
• Simple pricing based on users and applications,
• Premium developer support,
• A 99.9 percent uptime service level agreement,
• And access to premium features including cloud-based SQL and SSL later this year.

The collaboration between Google and VMware will enable users of the SpringSource Tool Suite and Google Web Toolkit to deploy their application onto the Google App Engine for business or a VMware environment or other cloud infrastructure such as Amazon EC2.

The VMware partnership and Google App Engine for Business announcements came as part of a raft of new announcements from Google at its I/O Conference for developers in San Francisco this week.
