Microsoft’s Bing search engine went down Thursday evening for 30 to 45 minutes for reasons still unknown. Service was around 11:45 p.m. Pacific time.

When users went to use the Bing search site or toolbar embedded in their browser, they only received an error message. The incident sparked a surge in Twitter activity by users trying to figure out what was happening with the search engine.

Microsoft acknowledged Bing went down on its Twitter feed, and announced service restoration through the social network. However, it has yet to offer any explanation for the service disruption.

Bloggers and tweeters are calling the Bing service disruption a black mark against the emerging cloud computing market. Many critics say the incident proves that cloud computing isn’t ready for wide-spread enterprise adoption.
