Top AWS partner Mission, a CDW company, has expanded the latter’s relationship with AMD, bringing AMD CPU-powered EC2 instances to more customers. We spoke with Mission’s President, Ted Stuart, about the agreement.

Mission applies existing CDW/AMD partnership to AWS focus areas

The collaboration is an extension of CDW’s long-standing partnership with AMD. Both companies say the agreement will help enterprises maximize the value of their AWS investments by utilizing AMD EPYC CPU-powered Amazon EC2 instances.

“AMD EPYC processor-powered instances on AWS continue to grow in popularity with their price-performance, scalability, and efficiency leadership for the most demanding cloud-based workloads,” said Brian Holley, corporate vice president, AWS business, AMD. “We are excited to collaborate with Mission to enable more customers to achieve the most from their AWS deployments, delivering impressive performance and maximizing the value of their cloud investment.”

“AMD’s new chipsets offer a powerful new avenue for our customers in terms of workload optimization and right-sizing,” Stuart told Channel Insider. “AMD has partnered with us to help identify what kinds of workloads are a best-fit for that architecture, so that we can guide our customers and help them save. That’s a win for everyone.”

How Mission plans to leverage AMD as it continues to scale AWS operations

Mission was acquired by CDW in 2024 and brings decades of deep expertise in the AWS ecosystem. Through the new deal with AMD, the provider aims to deliver a cost-efficient experience that meets its customers’ goals across sustainability and other objectives.

Mission says the key benefits of this new partnership include:

  • Enhanced cost efficiency: 10 to 15 percent lower costs (up to 45 percent in some regions) than comparable alternatives
  • Broad global availability: Over 100 AMD EPYC CPU-powered Amazon EC2 instances are available across 25 AWS regions
  • Seamless compatibility: x86 architecture enables fast, low-friction migrations
  • Sustainability gains: AMD processors use 29% less power than comparable alternatives

As we have reported throughout the year, cloud costs are now a common concern for executives at many businesses worldwide. There is also a growing focus on the sustainability of deployments, including power and energy-related costs, as organizations consider the full scope of their supply chains and technology stacks.

“Cost is an ever-present concern. I think what has changed is that the advent of AI creates a new potential cost center, so a lot of customers are asking, ‘How do I fund that? Where do I get the money to invest there?” Stuart said. “When you help a customer optimize, you are freeing them up to invest in those technologies.”

With this deal, Mission hopes to unlock new ways of showing strategic value to clients as they scrutinize their investments.

“We build relationships for the long term,” Stuart said. “Mission managed services give customers relationships with AWS experts who not only know the platform but also their back-end and business objectives deeply—when you have all three together, it means you (as the customer) can make informed decisions about your architecture, what to build, and how to run it.”
