The private sector added 13,000 jobs in June on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the most recent ADP National Employment Report, released today.

Medium businesses added the most jobs at 11,000, while small businesses were down 1,000 and large businesses were up 3,000.

The news was not as good for those working in the goods-producing sector, which lost 17,000 jobs during June. However, the service providing sector added 30,000 jobs.

"June’s rise in private employment was the fifth consecutive monthly gain. However, over these five months the increases have averaged a modest 34,000," said Joel Prakken, chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC, in a prepared statement. Macroeconomic Advisors works with ADP to create the report.

"Recent ADP Report data suggest that, following steady improvement through April, private employment may have decelerated heading into the summer. The slow pace of improvement from February through June is consistent with other publicly available data, including a pause in the decline of initial unemployment claims that occurred during the winter months.”

Prakken noted that ADP’s numbers do not include federal hiring for the 2010 U.S. Census, which will be included in the job numbers set to be released on Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
