Bitdefender security and protection score high across testing metrics

When it comes to security, the best way to assess Bitdefender’s threat detection and remediation capabilities is through its performance in independent antivirus tests.

In April 2025, Bitdefender’s business solutions received high marks from the independent testing firm AV-TEST. GravityZone Business Security earned awards for Best Protection and Best Advanced Protection in the Windows category, while GravityZone Business Security Enterprise also took home the Best Protection award.

This was highlighted in AV-TEST’s July–August 2025 product review and certification report, where Bitdefender Business Security Enterprise on Windows detected 100% of widespread malware samples during a four-week testing period. AV-TEST also found that Bitdefender blocked 100% of 0-day malware attacks, outperforming the industry average of 99.6%.

Bitdefender also excelled in handling false positives, with zero false detections recorded by AV-TEST—compared to the industry average of at least one.

AV-Comparatives likewise recognized Bitdefender’s stellar security performance. In its 2024 Enterprise Main-Test Series, Bitdefender earned the Approved Enterprise & Business Security Product Award and was certified in the Endpoint Prevention & Response Test.

These distinctions reflect Bitdefender’s success in rigorous tests that covered protection across multiple attack scenarios, remediation of pre-existing malware, low false-positive rates, and minimal impact on system performance.

Perhaps most importantly, Bitdefender’s strength lies in its consistency over time. Antivirus solutions are only as good as their day-to-day reliability. In Bitdefender’s case, its longstanding record of strong protection has made it a consistent leader in enterprise cybersecurity.

Bitdefender key features

Core Protection and Threat Capabilities

In terms of core antivirus capabilities, Bitdefender’s business solutions deliver a comprehensive security package. They feature top-ranked threat detection and prevention, with multilayered defenses against phishing, ransomware, and web-based attacks.

Built-in device controls help manage internal data leaks and contain potential malware infections, while centralized dashboards provide clear visibility across all endpoints and devices in your organization.

The base business plan, Business Security Premium, includes ransomware mitigation, web filtering and content control, risk management tools, fileless attack defense, and forensic analysis.

While the exact features vary by plan, I personally appreciate how Bitdefender’s baseline protections remain consistent across tiers, ensuring reliable coverage even at entry-level deployments.

Upgrading to higher-tier plans adds anomaly detection, one-click remediation, and extended detection and response (XDR) capabilities, further strengthening your security posture.  Add-ons, such as patch management, full disk encryption, and cloud security posture monitoring, can be purchased separately as well.

MSP-Focused Offerings

One of Bitdefender’s strengths is its extensive suite of solutions tailored to different business needs and customer use-cases.

On the channel side, Bitdefender offers GravityZone for MSPs, an integrated platform that unifies prevention, detection, and response within a single console.

The GravityZone MSP lineup

For MSPs, Bitdefender offers three dedicated software packages: Secure, Secure Plus, and Secure Extra.

  • Secure (EDR) – Designed for MSPs looking to reduce time spent on incident response while improving overall productivity.
  • Secure Plus (MDR) – Offers 24/7 threat monitoring, detection, and response with human-led threat hunting for deeper visibility.
  • Secure Extra (MXDR) – Builds on Secure Plus with end-to-end threat protection, advanced prevention, and XDR-powered remediation.

How Bitdefender Addresses Compliance Needs

When it comes to compliance, Bitdefender stands out with its built-in Risk Analytics capabilities, enabling MSPs to identify threats and vulnerabilities while providing predefined reports that can help demonstrate overall security posture to both clients and regulators.

Bitdefender also offers a dedicated GravityZone Compliance Manager, which automates reporting for key frameworks such as GDPR, SOC 2, HIPAA, DORA, PCI DSS, and NIS 2. The tool streamlines the collection of technical evidence and simplifies report generation—reducing manual overhead and helping organizations maintain compliance with key standards.

Channel Insiders: what partners say about Bitdefender

To gain a clearer picture of how Bitdefender performs in real-world environments, I reviewed discussions from third-party forums to gauge prevailing sentiments about its effectiveness and how it compares to competitors.

Wide feature-set for MSPs

In the MSP Reddit community, one user asked for advice on which antivirus software would be best for their company. Another user recommended Bitdefender, saying:

“We use Bitdefender Gravityzone for Endpoint, XDR and MDR. So far it has been 100% for us. The built-in DNS, Phishing, Malicious site blocking has proven more useful than I thought it would. Could sandboxing of unknown files is very strong security posture. Network scanning. It really has much more than most other endpoint security we looked at. If you are running Threatlocker on top of anything, you are in a good place.”

Balanced protection and value

Meanwhile, a user in the Antivirus Reddit community shared that they’ve consistently had a positive experience with Bitdefender, praising its balance of price, reliability, and performance.

“Bitdefender is great. It has very high detection rates, is quite cheap and a reliable AV. Even their free version is also great. I have generally heard people talk positive about it only,” the user said.

Strong, real-time threat prevention

In the System Administrator Reddit community, one user asked for antivirus recommendations for their small healthcare company—and a good number of users vouched for Bitdefender as a quality choice.

One user highlighted its proactive email and web protection, saying:

“Definitely Bitdefender. It stops everything. I can click on a link in a threat email and it will stop me from going to the URL. Then, it will tell me why it did so. I use it to report dangerous URLs but I also know that my machine is completely protected.”

Verdict: Is Bitdefender right for your organization?

Bitdefender stands out as a well-rounded security solution that balances strong protection, robust antivirus capabilities, and useful management features. Its GravityZone suite offers flexibility for both SMBs and MSPs, and its independent testing performance shows that it can handle modern threats without bogging down system performance.

It’s also earned a solid reputation among users for its high detection rates, affordability, and proactive threat prevention. Organizations that prioritize dependable protection and straightforward features will find Bitdefender to be a wise choice.

Alternatives to consider

If Bitdefender GravityZone’s features don’t fully meet your needs, here are a few alternative providers worth considering.

Trend Micro Vision One

For businesses seeking a more comprehensive security platform, Trend Micro’s Vision One is a strong option. While it includes antivirus capabilities, it functions as a broader cybersecurity solution that integrates exposure management, security operations, and layered protection into a single platform. It also leverages AI-powered defense through Trend Cybertron, its cybersecurity LLM designed to proactively predict, detect, and remediate threats at a fast rate.

Norton Small Business Premium

For small businesses, Norton’s Small Business Premium is another good pick. Its Device Security feature protects employee devices from malware, ransomware, and viruses, while PC Cloud Backup safeguards company files and data. It also includes a range of additional security tools such as dark web monitoring, a dedicated password manager, a VPN, and a private browser for complete, all-around protection.

McAfee Business Protection

Long-time security provider McAfee also offers a business-focused security solution through its McAfee Business Protection service. Designed to protect employee devices and data, it includes key capabilities such as next-gen threat protection, firewalls, anti-phishing tools, tracker removal, web protection, Wi-Fi scanning, and identity monitoring. For administrators, McAfee Business Protection also enables you to manage employee devices and create weekly security reports for compliance purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why does antivirus still matter for businesses and MSPs?

Even with modern EDR and XDR tools, antivirus remains the foundation of a strong security stack. It helps prevent common threats such as phishing, ransomware, and malware before they escalate into larger incidents.

This is especially true for organizations managing multiple endpoints across distributed teams—particularly those with remote or hybrid employees who connect from different networks and devices.

Does Bitdefender offer a free version?

Yes. Bitdefender provides a free antivirus option for consumers, which includes essential protection features. However, advanced capabilities such as safe online banking, firewall, and device optimization are found in Bitdefender’s paid plans.

On the business side, there are no free versions. However, Bitdefender does offer free trials for a good number of its business and MSP-focused subscriptions.

What makes Bitdefender appealing to MSPs?

Bitdefender’s GravityZone for MSPs platform offers centralized management, multitenancy, and scalable security options. Its tiers—Secure, Secure Plus, and Secure Extra—let MSPs match service levels to client needs while maintaining complete control through a unified console.

How does Bitdefender support compliance?

Bitdefender GravityZone’s built-in Risk Analytics and Compliance Manager automate reporting for regulations like GDPR, SOC 2, PCI DSS, HIPAA, and NIS 2. These tools simplify audits and reduce manual compliance work for both MSPs and internal IT teams.

Methodology

This review draws on independent testing data, analyst insights, and verified user experiences to evaluate how Bitdefender performs for businesses and MSPs. It was developed using research from reliable testing sources, vendor documentation, and trusted publications to ensure accuracy. A 30-day free trial of GravityZone Small Business Security was also used for research and first-hand testing.

This feature also incorporates feedback from real users and third-party review platforms to provide a balanced view of Bitdefender’s performance and value proposition across businesses and MSPs.

In June 2025, Bitdefender acquired email security provider Mesh Security to strengthen its XDR and MDR offerings and enhance protection against email-borne threats. Read more about this acquisition and other recent M&A activity across the channel.
