Kyndryl, an IT infrastructure services provider, recently announced plans to expand its partnership with Google Cloud to leverage generative AI (GenAI) for streamlining the modernization of mainframe applications and data for its customers.

Expanded partnership addresses AI-driven modernization demand

Kyndryl’s mainframe expertise, combined with Google Cloud’s GenAI capabilities, will provide customers with a significant opportunity to modernize their mainframe applications, enhance agility, and promote cloud-native innovation. Furthermore, Kyndryl is certified as a specialized partner for Google Cloud’s AI and Gemini models as part of this partnership.

Kyndryl’s mainframe modernization capabilities and Google Cloud’s suite of modernization products– such as Mainframe Assessment Tool (MAT), Dual Run, Mainframe Rewrite, and Gemini models– will enable the streamlined migration of mainframe workloads to the cloud. This process will include:

  • GenAI-driven code analysis and documentation of mainframe applications.
  • Rewriting of mainframe applications to modern applications in Google Cloud.
  • Creating future-ready technology stacks optimized for Google Cloud.
  • Testing, certifying, and de-risking of the modernization project.

“Google’s Gemini models and related tools are bringing new levels of efficiency to mainframe modernization efforts,” said Nirav Mehta, Senior Director of Cloud Infrastructure Solutions at Google Cloud. “Combined with Kyndryl’s long-standing experience with mainframes, our mutual customers will have the expertise and leading technology to successfully modernize mainframe applications faster and with more sustainable code.”

New program targets customers requiring additional help

As part of the partnership, Kyndryl and Google Cloud will offer a new Mainframe Modernization with GenAI Accelerator Program. Through this program, qualified customers will receive assistance in commencing their modernization journey without upfront commitments and will gain a clear understanding of how to integrate or modernize their applications and data more quickly, with tangible returns on investment.

After an assessment, customers will receive a modernization blueprint and plan. Kyndryl Consult experts will then guide customers through a phased modernization approach to demonstrate incremental value and enable informed decisions about their mainframe workloads.

Moreover, Kyndryl’s data democratization capabilities, together with Google Cloud’s Mainframe Connector solution, will enable the integration and enhancement of mainframe data with Google Cloud’s BigQuery analytics platform.

This integration will help customers unlock and leverage their data in several ways:

  • Bringing mainframe data into Google Cloud BigQuery, Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, and others to unlock its full potential.
  • Building dynamic reports and dashboards to enhance decision-making with greater insights.
  • Training AI models for predictive and GenAI solutions, driving innovations and operational efficiency.

“Google Cloud delivers the scalability and cutting-edge AI-driven capabilities needed to power and transform modern businesses,” said Petra Goude, Global Practice Leader for Core Enterprises & zCloud at Kyndryl. “Through our collaboration, customers can unlock the full potential of their mainframe data, create AI-driven innovations and transform mainframe applications to modern cloud applications with lower risk and faster time to value.”

Kyndryl also introduced a recent collaboration with Palo Alto Networks on new SASE offerings for customers. Read more about how this collaboration will help customers enhance network security through a cloud-first, zero-trust network security solution.
