InterVideo Inc. hopes to bring its “Instant On” PC to U.S. shores this year, company executives said Friday. Equipped with InterVideo’s technology, an Instant On PC can be booted in about ten seconds, far faster than a Windows-based computer.

InterVideo’s InstantON technology allows a Windows PC to be transformed into an optimized media player that works with InterVideo’s own software. The software, however, will be provided to OEMs and not sold at retail, InterVideo executives said.

InterVideo’s announcement comes as traditional consumer electronics companies and PC firms are rushing headlong at the living room. PCs have traditionally included an overabundance of storage and processing components to pipe multimedia content throughout the home, but have lacked the ease and convenience of consumer devices. One key aspect of that is the ability to “turn on,” not boot, a feature that Microsoft is also working to include in future revisions of its operating systems.
