Commvault will be a launch partner for the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, expanding its cloud-native data protection and cyber resilience capabilities to customers with strict data residency and sovereignty requirements across the European Union.

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud, which is set to launch in the German state of Brandenburg by the end of 2025, is designed as a fully independent cloud environment operated exclusively within the EU.

Supporting European sovereignty and compliance requirements

Commvault said its Commvault Cloud platform, including new cyber resilience features introduced as part of its recent Unity platform release, is planned to be available on the sovereign cloud in the first half of 2026.

AWS has positioned the European Sovereign Cloud as a response to growing regulatory and geopolitical pressure facing European governments and enterprises.

The cloud will be operated independently from existing AWS regions, with day-to-day operations managed solely by EU-based AWS employees and all infrastructure physically located within the EU.

For Commvault, the partnership represents an opportunity to extend its footprint with European customers navigating increasingly complex compliance mandates, including GDPR, DORA, and NIS2.

“Customers across Europe are under immense pressure to meet sovereignty requirements while defending against escalating cyber threats,” Darren Thomson, field CTO for security in EMEAI at Commvault, said in a statement. “As a launch partner for the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, we plan to deliver cyber resilience, bringing Commvault’s strongest protection and recovery capabilities to the organizations that need them most.”

Cyber resilience features aimed at regulated enterprises

Commvault Cloud is a SaaS platform with AI-enabled discovery, classification, and policy recommendations to simplify onboarding and resource protection across accounts in the sovereign cloud. The platform includes air-gapped backups, AI-enhanced threat detection and response, and cleanroom recovery orchestration.

Those capabilities are intended to help organizations analyze threats, test recovery processes, and stage restore operations without risking reinfection—an increasingly important requirement for regulated industries and public-sector organizations.

The company has positioned these features as core to modern cyber resilience strategies, particularly as ransomware attacks continue to target European enterprises and public infrastructure.

Channel Insider has previously covered how data protection vendors are expanding cleanroom recovery and threat detection capabilities to address these risks, including recent coverage of AI-driven backup platforms and ransomware recovery strategies.

Building on a deepening AWS partnership

The sovereign cloud announcement builds on Commvault’s long-standing collaboration with AWS. Earlier this year, Commvault achieved the AWS Resilience Competency in the Recovery category and was named the 2025 AWS Global Storage Partner of the Year—recognitions that underscore its growing role in AWS’s partner ecosystem.

Channel Insider has tracked AWS’s expanding focus on partner-led resilience and data protection services, including how AWS partners are aligning offerings with regional compliance demands and vertical-specific requirements.

Commvault said pricing for its sovereign cloud offering will be finalized ahead of general availability and will reflect AWS’s unique SaaS infrastructure and compute model within the sovereign environment.
