Business communications provider Mitel recently announced the appointment of Mike Robinson as its new CEO, succeeding Tarun Loomba.

Experienced telecom vet tapped to lead Mitel through next phase

Robinson will be tasked with leading Mitel’s next transformation phase and brings over three decades of experience in telecom, infrastructure, and enterprise services, as well as prior leadership roles as CEO, CFO, and board director across public and private companies globally.

“Mitel has made tremendous progress under Tarun’s leadership, and I’m grateful for the strong foundation he and the team have built through the acquisition of Unify and the financial restructuring,” said Robinson. “This is an important moment for the company. My priority is to move quickly through this next phase by listening and engaging with employees, customers, and partners, and ensuring our strategy continues to create value for those we serve. Mitel has an incredibly strong and loyal customer base, and I am committed to demonstrating that same loyalty back to them through the value, reliability, and innovation we deliver.”

Robinson most recently served as president and CEO of Sungard Availability Solutions and currently chairs Everstream Solutions, a fiber-based telecommunications carrier.

Loomba assumed the role of CEO in 2021, leading the organization through significant milestones, addressing global and market dynamics, and driving innovation in hybrid communications.

“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together, from navigating the pandemic to acquiring Unify to completing a successful restructuring, all of which strengthened Mitel’s foundation as a leading global communications vendor,” Loomba said. “The Mitel team and all our partners bring expertise and dedication to our customers that is not going to change. With Mike’s deep post-emergence experience, I am confident Mitel is positioned to accelerate even faster and deliver long-term customer value.”

Mitel’s new board of directors

Earlier in Q3, Mitel announced a new board of directors, led by Tony Abate as Chair. The board will work to provide strategic direction as the company implements its strategy to accelerate momentum in the unified communications market and drive long-term, sustainable growth.

Among the new board members appointed in July are:

  • Tony Abate was named Chair of the Board and serves as Chairman of GTT Communications and Tacora Resources. He has 35 years of experience in scaling infrastructure, software, and technology platforms.
  • Marc Lefar, the former CEO of Vonage and RentPath; CMO of Cingular Wireless (AT&T); Former Director of IPC Systems, cxLoyalty, and ClassPass.
  • Marika Lulay, the current director at Aareal Bank, EnBW, and FAZ GmbH; and former CEO of GFT Technologies SE.
  • Carl Wiese, the former CRO of HP/Poly and President, Global Sales & Service of Blackberry.
  • Robinson was also announced as a new member of the board of directors at the time.

“Unified communications sit at the heart of modern critical infrastructure,” Abate said in the announcement. “Mitel’s global installed base, channel strength, and enhanced balance sheet, combined with the significant market opportunity, position the company to capture increasing demand for secure, flexible, and AI-powered communications. I look forward to supporting the Mitel team as we focus on building durable, profitable growth.”

In addition to the new leadership changes Mitel announced this year, the company also announced a new unified global partner program. Learn more about the program and how it aims to meet the growing demand for hybrid communications.
