Apptio, an IBM company, has unveiled significant updates to its solution suite, including the launch of Conversational Insights, currently in preview, as well as new capabilities for hybrid IT cost management and cloud optimization.

These releases are designed to turn technology investments into measurable business outcomes while establishing best practices for AI financial governance for AI amid record infrastructure investments.

Managing increased IT spend and AI investment

According to Apptio, the new capabilities are designed to strengthen its Financial Intelligence Layer, which connects cost, consumption, value, and action across enterprise spending and operational data.

In its official press release, the company cited a Gartner forecast projecting global IT spending to reach $6.15 trillion in 2026, a 10.8% increase from 2025.

Apptio highlighted AI investments as a primary driver of that increase, noting that the surge in spending can create “significant financial blind spots” and increase pressure on executives to justify AI expenditures and demonstrate ROI.

“Technology is no longer a cost center; it is the engine of modern business. This reality demands a shift from reactive reporting to proactive, real-time monitoring of spend,” said Bill Lobig, vice president of Apptio.

“With the introduction of our new AI-infused capabilities, we are providing the automated, real-time insights leaders need to manage the complexity of hybrid IT to help ensure their technology investments become their greatest competitive advantage,” Lobig explained.

Conversational Insights aims to address complexity in spend management

To address these challenges, Apptio is launching Conversational Insights, an enterprise-grade conversational interface with AI embedded across the company’s entire solutions portfolio.

Conversational Insights provides a natural language AI interface that allows stakeholders to ask plain-language questions about project status, resource allocation, and financial performance and receive immediate, data-backed answers.

Apptio said it expects the insights generated by the new solution to help teams make more informed decisions about their IT investments and better align spending with financial targets.

Offering end-to-end visibility with cost modeling and forecasting

Alongside Conversational Insights, Apptio is introducing several platform enhancements designed to provide its AI engine with broader data from across hybrid IT environments. Key updates include:

  • IBM Apptio Data Center Total Cost of Ownership (TCO): This new capability bridges facility and operational data in a single model, allowing leaders to look into unit economics, quantify available headroom, gain the insights needed for a comprehensive cost breakdown by department, and identify where there’s capacity for further data center investment.
  • IBM Cloudability Intelligent Forecasting: Integrating IBM’s watsonx.ai, this feature uses advanced machine learning models to automatically generate spend forecasts, improving budgeting accuracy.
  • Cloudability Advanced Containers: Powered by Kubecost, this add-on brings advanced real-time, container-level cost visibility and savings insights directly into Cloudability. By integrating granular Kubernetes cost management capabilities directly, DevOps teams can see the cost impact of their work in real time at the container level.

Conversational Insights is currently available in preview and is expected to reach general availability in 2026.

Meanwhile, Cloudability Intelligent Forecasting and Data Center TCO are scheduled to become generally available in the second quarter of 2026.

In February, Apptio published its 2026 Technology Investment Management Report, which found that nearly three-quarters (74%) of surveyed organizations plan to increase IT spending in 2026.
