Cloudflare Gives AI Agents Wallets to Pay for APIs and Online Content

Cloudflare is giving AI agents identities and programmable wallets, creating new integration, security, and payment opportunities for channel partners.

Cloudflare is giving AI agents persistent identities and programmable wallets that let them pay for APIs, data, and online content.

The company introduced Cloudflare Wallets and cloudflare.pay, two services designed to help businesses identify the owners behind AI agents while enabling controlled stablecoin payments. cloudflare.pay serves as the payment layer, allowing AI agents to discover payment requirements, send stablecoin payments, and complete transactions with participating digital services.

The launch could create service opportunities for channel partners working in agent deployment, merchant integration, security, governance, and payment management.

Cloudflare combines agent identity with payments

Cloudflare says accounts will receive a unique web address that can function as a stable identity. Account owners will be able to assign that identity to specific agents, giving merchants and API providers a way to see who authorized an incoming request.

“When an agent shows up at your door, you need to know who sent it,” Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince said in Cloudflare’s press release.

Cloudflare Wallets will include an Account Wallet controlled by the customer and separate Virtual Wallets assigned to individual agents.

Customers will be able to set an allowance, approve specific merchants, and limit the size of individual transactions. These controls are intended to prevent an agent from spending without restrictions or purchasing services from an unauthorized provider.

The wallets will hold stablecoins and allow agents to make payments from funds assigned by their owners. 

Agents could buy APIs without traditional checkout

An AI agent trying to use a new API commonly requires a person to create an account, enter a payment method, generate an API key, and complete other onboarding steps.

Cloudflare’s proposed model would allow agents to handle more of that process directly. The company said Virtual Wallets will let agents buy APIs, Model Context Protocol tools, data, AI inference, and online content.

Payments will use the x402 protocol, which allows payment information to be attached to an HTTP request. The protocol could support small, individual transactions instead of requiring buyers to purchase a full subscription or establish a long-term billing relationship.

Cloudflare Wallets will also work with the company’s Monetization Gateway, which is designed to help businesses sell access to websites, applications, APIs, and content through micropayments.

Channel partners could manage agent spending

MSPs, systems integrators, cloud consultants, and security providers could help customers decide which agents should receive wallets and what each agent is allowed to purchase.

Potential services include:

  • Connecting agent identities to enterprise governance and access systems
  • Configuring spending limits, approved providers, and transaction policies
  • Monitoring purchases for fraud, misuse, and unexpected costs

Partners could also help software vendors, data providers, and publishers prepare their services for machine-to-machine sales. That work may include enabling x402-compatible endpoints, designing usage-based pricing, verifying agent identities, and connecting transactions to existing billing and reporting systems.

The technology may initially appeal to AI developers and businesses that want agents to test multiple APIs without opening a traditional account with every provider.

Full wallet access will arrive later

Customers can reserve a Cloudflare Wallet handle now, but the company said full access will become available in the coming months.

Future capabilities are expected to include depositing and withdrawing funds, holding stablecoins, and issuing Virtual Wallets to individual agents.

The limited initial rollout means partners should treat Cloudflare Wallets as an emerging platform rather than a complete payment ecosystem.

Stablecoin compliance, transaction disputes, tax reporting, fraud controls, and responsibility for unauthorized purchases will require further consideration. Partners will also need to determine how agent transactions fit into customers’ existing identity, security, procurement, and financial approval processes.

Cloudflare is betting that agents will increasingly purchase digital services on behalf of people and businesses. Channel partners that can connect those transactions to enterprise controls may have an opportunity to make agentic commerce safer and easier to manage.
