Google is making one of its largest U.S. data center investments yet—$4 billion to build a massive campus in West Memphis, Arkansas. Spread across more than 1,000 acres, the facility will serve as the company’s first in the state and a critical hub for powering Google Cloud’s exploding AI and cloud services.

“Google is investing in the next generation of AI innovation in Arkansas and across the country,” Google’s president and chief investment officer Ruth Porat said. “We see AI and the energy powering it to be the innovations that will define this century. The upside of AI cannot be unlocked without the energy it requires.”

Energy, jobs, and education

Alongside the new data center, Google is partnering with Entergy to develop a 600-megawatt solar project and a 350-megawatt battery storage system in the region. Google will cover the full energy costs tied to the project, which Entergy says will deliver over $1.1 billion in net benefits during the contract’s life and reduce rates for local customers.

Porat highlighted the benefits and payoff locally: “Google is building energy capacity that protects affordability for ratepayers and creates jobs that will drive the AI-powered economy.”

Hundreds of operations roles and thousands of construction jobs are expected. On top of that, Google will provide Arkansas residents, including local colleges, free access to its AI courses and career certifications.

Local leaders hail the project

“This project is more than just jobs, buildings and technology,” said West Memphis Mayor Marco McLendon. “It’s about the future of our city, opportunity, investment and education.”

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders agreed. “Google’s multibillion-dollar investment in West Memphis is one of the largest investments ever in our state,” she said.

Part of a bigger AI push

The Arkansas campus is just one piece of Google’s broader expansion. CEO Sundar Pichai recently highlighted the surging AI and cloud demand, noting that Google Cloud’s annual revenue run rate now exceeds $50 billion.

“With this strong and growing demand for our cloud products and services, we are increasing our investment in capital expenditures in 2025 to approximately $85 billion and are excited by the opportunity ahead,” Pichai said back in August.

For West Memphis, the project marks a new chapter, what McLendon called the start of a “Digital Delta West.” And for Google, it signals how seriously the company is betting on the infrastructure needed to fuel the AI economy.

It’s no secret that AI is dominating today’s tech adoption cycles. But all of that demand comes with a catch… the strain it places on data centers tasked with managing and powering AI at scale. Channel Insider recently spoke with an industry expert about how operators can better balance the surging appetite for AI with the energy and sustainability concerns that come with it.
