SonicWall is expanding its Gen 8 security platform beyond physical appliances with the launch of the NSv XS, a new virtual firewall designed for managed service providers (MSPs) and managed security service providers (MSSPs).

Gen 8 security platform expands to virtual environments

Announced Tuesday, the NSv XS brings SonicWall’s Gen 8 protections into cloud and virtualized environments for smaller deployments, including branch offices, micro-SMBs, and distributed work sites.

The company says the offering is aimed at helping partners build recurring managed security services without large upfront commitments or licensing minimums.

The launch comes as businesses continue shifting workloads to the cloud. According to SonicWall’s 2026 Cyber Protect Report, 52% of enterprises now run most of their infrastructure in cloud environments, while medium and high-severity cyberattacks rose 20.8% over the past year.

“Cloud adoption didn’t wait for security to catch up and neither did the attackers,” said Chandro Prasad, chief product officer at SonicWall.

“NSv XS extends our Gen 8 platform into the cloud and hypervisor environments for the first time, closing the inspection gap that perimeter-only security leaves behind,” Prasad added. “Paired with SonicOS 8.2.1 and purpose-built subscription tiers, it gives partners everything they need to build a managed virtual firewall practice without adding complexity or cost.”

SonicWall targets MSP and MSSP deployments

SonicWall says the NSv XS is built specifically for the kinds of smaller, distributed environments commonly managed by MSPs. Despite its smaller footprint, the company claims the virtual firewall delivers major performance gains over its earlier NSv 10 offering.

According to the company, VPN throughput rises to 780 Mbps from 500 Mbps on the previous generation, while encrypted traffic inspection capacity increases eightfold. Threat prevention throughput also nearly doubles.

The product includes high availability support without additional licensing fees and ships with embedded cyber warranty coverage through Cysurance, a move SonicWall says is intended to provide added financial protection for customers and partners.

The virtual firewall supports deployments across VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, KVM, AWS, Azure, and Proxmox environments. SonicWall specifically highlighted Proxmox support, pointing to growing MSP interest in open-source virtualization platforms.

Subscription tiers support managed security services

The NSv XS launches with three subscription tiers designed around managed service business models. The Secure Connect tier focuses on secure connectivity, centralized management, and high availability.

The Advanced Protection Security Suite (APSS) adds broader threat prevention features, cloud management, and up to $100,000 in cyber warranty coverage.

At the top end, the Managed Protection Security Suite (MPSS) includes co-managed security services from SonicSentry NOC teams, after-hours critical support, and up to $200,000 in warranty coverage.

SonicOS and NSM updates add MSP management features

SonicWall is also rolling out SonicOS 8.2.1 and NSM 4.0 alongside the new firewall platform. The updated SonicOS release adds features including automated blocking of compromised IP addresses, enhanced encrypted traffic transport, SD-WAN traffic routing improvements, and always-on encrypted traffic inspection for larger deployments.

Meanwhile, NSM 4.0 introduces simplified VPN policy management, compliance checks, and expanded reporting tools to reduce operational overhead for MSPs running firewall services at scale.

NSv XS availability and partner channel rollout

SonicWall says the Gen 8 NSv XS, SonicOS 8.2.1, and NSM 4.0 are available immediately through its global partner network on monthly and annual subscription plans, with no minimum purchase requirements or long-term commitments.
