Google-backed Indian space startup Pixxel has raised $100 million as it tries to turn its satellite business into a broader platform for governments and companies that need faster, richer views of Earth.
Pixxel said Monday that Temasek and Seraphim led its Series C funding round, with new investors 360 ONE Asset and IMM Investment joining existing backers including Radical Ventures and growX Ventures.
The deal takes Pixxel’s total funding to $195 million and marks the largest single funding round raised by an Indian space technology company, according to Pixxel. The company did not disclose a valuation.
Founded in 2019 by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal, Pixxel initially focused on hyperspectral imaging, which captures hundreds of narrow wavelengths of light rather than the limited bands used by conventional satellite cameras. That can help reveal information about materials and conditions on the ground that ordinary imagery may miss.
Pixxel has since added Aurora, its Earth intelligence software, and satellite systems for commercial and sovereign missions.
More sensors, more satellites
The new capital will fund the next generation of Pixxel’s satellite network, including its Honeybee hyperspectral constellation. The first Honeybee satellite is expected to launch in 2027.
The company also plans to add synthetic aperture radar and ultra-high-resolution optical imaging to its sensing capabilities. It is expanding manufacturing in India and the US and plans to use Aurora to combine data from different sensors into information customers can use for decisions.
Pixxel has already deployed six Firefly satellites and says they form the world’s highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral constellation. It also has contracts involving NASA and the US National Reconnaissance Office and was selected to lead a 12-satellite public-private Earth observation constellation under India’s space regulator, IN-SPACe.
“This new investment gives us the scale to turn that vision into planetary infrastructure,” Pixxel founder and CEO Awais Ahmed said.
From pictures to infrastructure
The real significance of the funding goes beyond putting more Pixxel satellites in orbit. The bigger challenge—and opportunity—is what happens once those increasingly powerful sensors start generating vast amounts of data: turning it into information that people can actually use.
Hyperspectral imagery can be powerful, but customers still need the expertise and software to interpret it. Ahmed told Payload that for every customer that understands what to do with hyperspectral imagery, there are many more that do not know how to use it.
That puts Aurora at the center of Pixxel’s growth strategy. If the company can make complex satellite data easier to interpret while adding radar and conventional high-resolution imagery, it could sell a broader intelligence service rather than individual streams of satellite data.
This could create opportunities for cloud providers, data specialists and systems integrators that can help customers incorporate Earth-observation data into industry-specific applications.
Expanding across satellites, software and manufacturing will also make Pixxel’s business more complex and capital-intensive. Honeybee’s planned 2027 launch will test whether the company can turn that investment into a reliable platform—and whether partners can build services around its growing supply of Earth-observation data.
