Nvidia is moving deeper into the physical infrastructure behind AI, taking a minority stake in Cloverleaf Infrastructure as data center developers race to secure land, power, and grid access.
The companies announced the investment Friday without disclosing financial terms. The Wall Street Journal reported that Nvidia could invest several hundred million dollars, citing people familiar with the deal.
Founded in 2024, Cloverleaf works with utilities, energy providers, developers, and investors to prepare sites for large data center projects. The Wall Street Journal reported that the company has developed more than 7 gigawatts of powered land and has a pipeline exceeding 10 gigawatts.
For Nvidia, the investment extends its growing involvement in the infrastructure needed to deploy its chips. The company has recently backed other power and data center developers, including SoftBank-owned SB Energy and Lancium.
The partnership comes as AI developers face a basic constraint: Having advanced chips is not enough if there is nowhere to install them or enough electricity to run them.
Cloverleaf specializes in arranging power agreements with utilities and preparing sites for data center construction. That makes it an important link between power infrastructure and the companies building AI facilities.
“AI is accelerating demand for digital infrastructure at an unprecedented scale and driving strong economic development opportunities for American communities,” said David Berry, co-founder and CEO of Cloverleaf.
Nvidia’s Nico Caprez, vice president of global AI infrastructure growth, said, “AI factories are the infrastructure of the intelligence age, and land, power and shell are their foundation.”
DSX brings infrastructure decisions together
Cloverleaf will also use Nvidia’s DSX platform to bring site selection, power, cooling, computing and facility planning into the same design process.
The goal is to identify infrastructure tradeoffs earlier, particularly around electricity, water and grid constraints. Once facilities are operating, Nvidia says DSX can help optimize energy consumption and computing capacity. That could give developers a clearer picture of how much computing capacity a site can realistically support before committing to construction.
What the deal means for Nvidia
The investment shows Nvidia is moving further upstream in the AI infrastructure chain. Instead of simply supplying GPUs after a data center is built, the company is helping shape where facilities are located and how their power and cooling systems are designed.
That strategy could help Nvidia address a growing risk to its own business: AI chip demand can outpace the industry’s ability to build data centers capable of deploying those chips.
There is a downside, however. Large AI facilities face long power-connection timelines, permitting hurdles and local opposition, meaning financial backing and better design tools cannot guarantee projects will reach completion.
Still, Nvidia’s Cloverleaf investment suggests the next bottleneck in the AI race may have less to do with computing hardware and more to do with the physical infrastructure required to keep it running.
