Ninety-eight percent of enterprise leaders would allow AI agents to autonomously make changes in production environments, provided the right safeguards are in place, according to Caylent’s newly published 2026 Enterprise Readiness for Agentic Engineering & Autonomous Cloud Operations report.
The findings also suggest agentic AI is moving beyond experimentation, with 59.5% of respondents reporting that their organizations already run AI agents autonomously in production.
Enterprises weigh how much authority to give AI agents
The research, conducted by Censuswide among 200 senior enterprise leaders at organizations with 1,000 or more employees across the US and Canada, found that adoption within these businesses is far from unconditional.
Rather, the findings suggest that the barrier to greater autonomy is increasingly about architecture, governance, and the conditions under which organizations are willing to give AI agents more authority.
“The question of whether enterprises will adopt agentic AI is settled. What’s left is authority, not accuracy. Model accuracy isn’t the hardest part of the problem anymore. It’s how much latitude to give an agent, how every action gets approved, and what happens when it’s wrong,” said Randall Hunt, chief technology officer at Caylent.
“Velocity comes from allowing humans in the loop to rapidly approve agentic behaviors and minimize risk with guardrails and systems designed for agentic interactions. The enterprises that nail those conditions first are going to move a lot faster than everyone still stuck debating where to start,” Hunt added.
Guardrails become the next hurdle for agentic AI
Despite growing AI adoption across organizations, many tech leaders emphasized the need for proper safeguards as AI agents are given greater autonomy.
According to the report, 83% of respondents place guardrails on equal or higher footing than model intelligence when it comes to accelerating adoption, suggesting that governance remains a key consideration alongside AI capability.
“Security scanning, audit trails, rollback capabilities, and blast radius controls are not optional features to be added at scale. They are the preconditions for getting there,” the report stated.
Other findings include:
- Organizations are piloting, deploying, or actively evaluating automated testing (67.5%), automated incident response (60.5%), and agents writing and committing code autonomously (43%).
- 23.5% of enterprise leaders report AI agents are broadly deployed across engineering and operations workflows, beyond initial pilots.
- 93.5% find autonomous execution acceptable in production environments.
- Only 2% say no set of conditions would make autonomous production execution acceptable.
Governance takes priority as autonomy expands
Based on the findings, Caylent emphasized governance as a key area of focus as organizations move beyond AI experimentation and toward broader deployment.
“The findings in this report point to a single conclusion: the barriers to agentic AI adoption in enterprise engineering and cloud operations are not about what AI can do.”
“They are about what organizations have built to govern it. The capability is available, the business pressure is real, and the market has a clear conditional ‘yes’. What enterprises are waiting for is the control architecture that makes acting on all three responsible.”

As enterprises give AI agents more production authority, partners can help design approval workflows, security controls, audit trails, rollback processes, and monitoring frameworks.
