Commvault’s Simpana 9 data management software “bridges the physical storage world and the rapidly emerging virtual one” by adding four major new functions including generation three deduplication extended to the source level, support for Xen virtualization platforms, simplified migration tools, and better protection of snap backups.

The result is Simpana 9, which Commvault is launching this week, a platform that enables channel partners to speed up recovery of virtual machines, eliminate redundant data, produce faster back up and recoveries, cut storage-related costs and migrate from competitive systems such as Symantec NetBackup and Tivoli Storage Manager, the company said.

“Gen 3 dedupe doesn’t pigeonhole a client or a reseller to buy a specific type of hardware,” Commvault’s America Channel Chief Mark Conley told Channel Insider. “They can use the arrays of their choice. Our software is completely hardware independent. It lets the partner recommend the thing they think is the best. They can also bring a solution to the customer.”

Maybe that’s why Commvault was able to grow its channel revenue by 48 percent in the last year, and the reason behind why it does 84 percent of its business through indirect channels. Partners like it because it offers a between 18 percent and 20 percent margin on sales, according to Conley.

The new Simpana 9 platform adds to the features that channel partners will like, says Conley. Commvault says that test results have shown that 500 virtual machines can be protected in just 17 minutes. Simpana 9 also includes advanced, automated discovery and more granular restore capabilities. A single console offers unique integrated visibility into resource consumption and storage utilization for both virtual and physical environments resulting in simplified lifecycle management, protection and retention of data across all tiers, the company says.

In addition, the company says that CommVault Simpana 9 can help organizations do the following:

  • Eliminate 90 percent of redundant data coming off the source and 90 percent less data transferred over the network
  • Produce 50 percent faster backups – cutting the backup window in half
  • Cut storage related costs by 50 percent.
