Boston Dynamics demonstrated the capabilities of its production Atlas humanoid at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the robot presented a ceremonial match ball and performed a series of goal celebrations. The appearance showed how far industrial humanoids have advanced, although Boston Dynamics has not disclosed an official price or made Atlas generally available for purchase.
Hugging Face’s Pollen Robotics team has introduced a much smaller and more accessible alternative for physical AI development. Microduck is a $399 bipedal robot that works out of the box, while its open-source software stack allows developers to retrain its behaviors and transfer new skills from simulation to the robot.
For developers, educators and potential solution partners, Microduck offers a lower-cost way to experiment with reinforcement learning and physical AI without investing in a large industrial robot.
What Microduck can do
Microduck can walk, sit, crouch, kick and recover from several common falls. In video footage shared on X by Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue, the robot also roller-skates and uses its articulated beak to pick up small objects. Each unit generates its own persistent, creature-like voice when it is first activated.
At 25 centimeters tall and less than 800 grams, Microduck is small enough to use on a desk, in a classroom or on a standard development workbench.
The robot is also equipped with a front-facing camera, compact LiDAR sensor, two inertial measurement units and 15 motors providing 15 degrees of freedom across its articulated legs, head and neck.
Delivery, availability and options
The $399 figure is an introductory preorder price before taxes and shipping. Preorders opened Aug. 27, 2026, with the first deliveries targeted before Christmas 2026.
At launch, orders are available in North America and Europe.
For $399, Pollen Robotics includes the robot, battery, USB-C cable and game controller. Buyers can separately purchase a $39 charger pack, a $39 accessory pack or a $119 developer pack.
Building for the human-robot era
Microduck is Pollen Robotics’ second consumer robot. The company introduced Reachy Mini, a desktop robot designed for human interaction, in July 2025.
Reachy Mini also comes at prices of $399 and $499, showing the company’s commitment to building physical AI products for the consumer market.
Pollen Robotics also designed Microduck to appear approachable and “not take itself too seriously.” Its articulated beak, duck-like proportions and waddling gait distinguish it from more conventional humanoid designs.
Microduck is too small to perform substantial household or industrial work, but that is not its primary purpose. Its $399 introductory price and open-source software could make physical AI development more accessible to schools, research teams and independent developers.
For channel partners, the longer-term opportunity may lie in helping customers turn platforms such as Microduck into training tools, prototypes and customized robotics applications. Its first deliveries before Christmas should provide an early indication of whether an ecosystem can develop around lower-cost physical AI hardware.
