Three major Chinese technology companies are deepening their involvement in the open-source AI ecosystem.
Alibaba Cloud, Cambricon and Ant Group highlighted their PyTorch Foundation memberships at PyTorch Conference China 2026 in Shanghai. Alibaba Cloud and AI chipmaker Cambricon are Platinum members, while Ant Group has joined at the Gold level.
Platinum membership gives Alibaba Cloud and Cambricon one seat each on the foundation’s Governing Board and Technical Advisory Council. The announcement did not specify equivalent governance privileges for Gold member Ant Group.
How the companies contribute to PyTorch
Alibaba Cloud’s Platinum membership was initially announced in May 2026. The PyTorch Foundation reiterated that membership alongside the additions of Cambricon and Ant Group at its Sept. 7–9 conference in Shanghai, but did not explain why Alibaba Cloud was presented as a new member again.
Cambricon and Ant Group are the newly announced additions.
A designer of AI chips and accelerators, Cambricon plans to reduce friction between PyTorch applications and its hardware. The company said it wants to help PyTorch deliver broader native support across different hardware backends.
On the other hand, Ant Group, a leading digital services provider, is less concerned with AI chips and more with the AI application layer. The company is involved in open-source projects around open models, AI agents, and cloud infrastructure.
Ant Group is already behind a PyTorch Ecosystem Landscape project called AReaL, focused on reinforcement-learning infrastructure for training agents. Its membership formalizes work Ant Group is already doing within the PyTorch ecosystem.
“Joining the PyTorch Foundation is another step in Ant Group’s long-term participation in global open-source collaboration. We look forward to working with the community to lower the barriers to AI development and adoption through open models, infrastructure and agent technologies,” said Zhengyu He, Chief Technology Officer, Ant Group.
What the memberships mean for channel partners
PyTorch is already available through cloud platforms including AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Alibaba Cloud, giving developers several environments in which to build and deploy AI workloads.
Cambricon’s planned integration could also reduce the code changes and optimization work required when customers adopt its AI accelerators. However, foundation membership does not guarantee that existing workloads will run unchanged across different hardware. Compatibility will still depend on the available software libraries, drivers and individual workload requirements.
For channel partners, the memberships point to a broader AI infrastructure market in which customers can combine open-source frameworks with cloud services and accelerators from more vendors. Partners should still evaluate each platform’s compatibility and support before recommending it, but broader PyTorch participation could make it easier to offer alternatives to customers seeking more flexibility in their AI stacks.
