Intelligent power management company Eaton has introduced a new reference architecture designed to accelerate the adoption of 800 V DC power in AI data centers.
The design is purpose-built to support NVIDIA’s recently announced 800 V DC power architecture, enabling more efficient high-density computing (HPC) infrastructure and helping data centers meet rising power demands.
Future-proofing AI factories to meet rising energy demands
With increasingly demanding AI workloads, NVIDIA is partnering with a range of companies to drive the transition towards 800 VDC data center power infrastructure. As one of NVIDIA’s leading power systems partners, Eaton’s solutions will be integrated into AI infrastructure designed to deliver megawatt-scale racks safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.
According to Eaton, its reference design incorporates Eaton solutions with NVIDIA AI infrastructure. Eaton products featured in the design include the following:
- Supercapacitors for fast-cycle power backup
- Power distribution technology through a busbar is included in the ORV3 design
- A hot aisle containment system to support busway and cable trays within the application
- DC connectors and other Eaton products
“The introduction of 800 VDC architectures is a transformative advancement for data center
innovation that will enable new possibilities in AI computing,” said JP Buzzell, vice president
and data center chief architect at Eaton.
“We’re proud to deepen our collaboration with NVIDIA with the introduction of this new reference design, a major step in our grid-to-chip strategy, as we help accelerate the transition to the AI factory of the future,” Buzzell added.
Similarly, Dion Harris, senior director of HPC, Cloud, and AI Infrastructure at NVIDIA, highlighted how the 800 VDC architecture and NVIDIA’s partnership with Eaton will help AI data centers meet increasing power demands without sacrificing efficiency.
“Streamlined 800 VDC architectures enable AI infrastructure to meet rising workload demands while maximizing energy efficiency,” said Harris.
“NVIDIA’s collaboration with innovators like Eaton is paving the way for high-density computing environments built for the AI industrial age.”
Eaton’s ongoing data center infrastructure efforts
Eaton’s “grip-to-chip” strategy represents its comprehensive approach to delivering intelligent solutions across the entire AI data center power chain. This includes power distribution, backup power solutions, and other digital technologies.
Over the past year, Eaton has made several other moves to advance its grip-to-chip strategy. In September, it launched a new solution to mitigate AI power bursts—instances where large fluctuations in energy demand arise from AI computing infrastructure.
In June, the company also partnered with global energy tech provider Siemens Energy to support the fast construction of modular data centers with integrated on-site power generation.
