Google's Worst Enemies

By Ericka Chickowski on 2011-02-03

Google's meteoric rise from search engine specialist to technology superpower has not come without consequences. Apple

2010 saw Apple duking it out with Google over smartphone supremacy. According to NPD analysts, Android has got the edge in the U.S. market over iPhone, though Apple says globally iPhone still rules.

ResRIMearch in Motion

RIM may still be standing on the top of the smartphone heap, but Android's rapid rise in 2010 is making Blackberry look more like an also-ran than a market leader.

Microsoft

Be it in smartphones, search or productivity apps, Microsoft is being bombarded by Google innovations that are cutting into the Redmond giant's profits. Don't expect Ballmer and company to take the manhandling lying down.

Amazon

Google has not made many friends at Amazon since it decided to get aggressive about putting loads of e-book content up on the Web for free.

Zoho

Google may be the pioneer in cloud productivity apps, but it's hardly flying solo. Other companies such as Zoho, which claims to be more business-friendly, are vying with Google to make a claim on our productivity and collaboration budgets.

Facebook

There's no doubt that Google and Facebook are both guilty of looking covetously upon one another's businesses. However, Facebook's e-mail has gotten pretty tepid responses while Google Buzz generated a ton of bad publicity on the privacy front last year.

Mozilla

Google's been stepping all over Mozilla's anti-establishment turf with it's Chrome browser fighting for Firefox's share and loads of e-mail tools that make folks wonder why they need a client-based alternative such as Thunderbird at all.
