VMware View 4
In this economy, doing more with less has been hugely
important, helping to drive the growth of virtualization products. So a
virtualization product from the virtualization leader turned in a
winning performance.
It's been an "interesting" year for VMware, with growing competition
from Microsoft (Hyper-V) and Citrix (everything Xen), but the company
captured the product category in the relatively new space of desktop
virtualization, with VMware View 4. The desktop virtualization solution
delivers PC over IP protocol -- bringing virtualized PC desktops to the
client side for the first time.
According to early reports, the channel sees View 4 as a
game-changing disruptive technology that could revolutionize how IT
infrastructure is deployed today. Plus, it looks to be highly
profitable for solution providers to offer it to their end customers.
Built on vSphere, the company's virtualization platform, View
promises to provide cost reductions in the form of simplified IT
management as well as quick and easy disaster recovery, and it
reportedly reduces desktop total cost of ownership by as much as 50
percent. It provides a "compelling opportunity to leverage our
knowledge and expertise in virtualization and forever change how
desktop services are both delivered and consumed," said Paul Maritz,
president and chief executive officer of VMware.
