Rick Devenuti, Microsoft's services chief, announced his retirement Oct. 11.

Devenuti, senior vice president, Microsoft Enterprise Services & IT since 2003, is stepping down to spend more time with his family and focus on "his next challenge," Microsoft officials said in a statement. He is 48 years old.

No successor has been identified, but one is expected within a month, Microsoft said. Devenuti will remain with Microsoft through the transition.

During his tenure at the Redmond, Wash., software maker, Devenuti led the U.S. financial analysis team, worldwide operations and was CIO of Microsoft's internal IT organization.

Microsoft is in the second year of a three-year plan Devenuti conceived to develop a SKU program for packaged services based on the processes Microsoft develops in its own consulting engagements.

Under Devenuti, Microsoft began to manage desktop computers, a managed services offering, at Energizer and more recently XL Capital, which many expect would lead to Microsoft's own MSP offering for resale by partners.
