Avnet Technology Solutions has created a bundled storage solution designed to help VARs improve storage efficiency for their customers.

The operating group of distributor Avnet created the inline data deduplication solution with the midmarket customer in mind, from components from Sun Microsystems and Diligent Technologies.

The solution is designed to help find duplicated data in storage systems and eliminate it, thereby making the overall storage more efficient.

"This gives the end user the ability to store data using less space," said Kim Hoffman, director of storage solutions for the Sun Solutions Group at Avnet. "There are a lot of issues today with the cost and energy around maintaining storage.  This solution eliminates duplicate storage."

Hoffman's group within Sun has been working to find new go-to-market solutions for Avnet and Sun partners. With that in mind, his group performed the physical integration between the Sun hardware and software and the Diligent software. The total solution includes hardware and software installation and services.

"We are assembling it, testing it and sending it to our partners," Hoffman said. "Our partners can participate in the installation."

The data deduplication solution combines Sun’s Sun Fire x4200 M2 server and a Sun StorageTek 2530 SAS storage array with Diligent’s ProtecTier inline data deduplication software, according to Avnet. It offers a four-way server with 6.3TB of physical capacity. ProtecTier enables a capacity expansion of up to 25 times the physical capacity of the system, bringing the usable capacity of the system to beyond 150TB of backup data.

Separately, Avnet announced that it will add BridgeHead Software to its line card.  The worldwide distribution agreement brings Bridgehead's archiving and backup software products to Avnet's channel partners, with an initial emphasis on the health care market, the company said in a prepared release.
