While other PC-makers are racing to release new, low-cost products for SMBs, Panasonic is strengthening the battery life, security and screens of its Toughbook notebooks and tablets that start above $3,000. Panasonic believes this will give it added strength in key verticals.

The latest generation of Panasonic Toughbook notebook and tablet PCs will feature extended battery life, improved security, Intel Centrino processes, integrated Qualcomm wireless and management features previously only found in Dell and Hewlett-Packard machines.

The Toughbook 30 laptop and Toughbook 19 tablet also come with a hefty price tag above $3,200. While other PC and notebook manufacturers—including Lenovo and Toshiba—are racing to press low-cost notebooks into services, Panasonic believes its new machines will give it a leg up in key vertical markets that rely on rugged computers—emergency services, military and homeland security and health care, to name a few.

According to the Channel Insider 2009 Market Pulse Report, these same verticals are also seeing some of the more moderate cuts in IT spending.
