Custom Apps Help Firms Respond Better to Change

By Michael Vizard

Despite many of the horror stories associated with projects gone awry, a surprisingly high percentage of business executives still think IT matters more than ever. A survey of 301 business executives at companies with revenue of $1 billion or more shows that the vast majority views IT as important to their ability to compete. In fact, business executives are showing a marked preference for custom applications that they say enable their organizations to more rapidly respond to changing business conditions. That doesn't mean they don't have concerns about custom application development projects, but it is clear that the rewards those projects enable far outweigh the risks. "With 95 percent of business executives believing that investment in technology gives them a competitive advantage, separating leaders from the followers, it is time for organizations to harness the power of next-generation applications and custom software," said Matt Calkins, president and CEO of Appian. The survey was carried out by market research firm Harris Poll on behalf of Appian, a provider of customizable business process management (BPM) software.
