HP, Vidyo Partner on Visual Collaboration Services
Technology giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Vidyo Inc., a software-based videoconferencing solution provider, announced an agreement to expand the HP Halo portfolio to include conference room and desktop endpoints that run on enterprise networks. Available through HP and channel partners, the solutions will be interoperable with traditional videoconferencing endpoints and current HP Halo telepresence and video conferencing solutions.
The solutions offered by HP will include an executive desktop solution running on an HP TouchSmart PC. The two companies said they would begin jointly marketing these solutions later this year. The offerings will use Vidyo’s VidyoConferencing line of software-based desktop and room system-based solutions running on HP servers to reduce a customer’s network and video infrastructure requirements while delivering high-definition video conferencing capabilities.
"Companies need a complete portfolio of endpoint solutions, including video at the desktop, on mobile devices and in conference rooms, so they can collaborate more effectively," said Rob Scott, vice president and general manager, of HP’s Halo Telepresence Solutions. "Together with Vidyo, we will provide customers with quality desktop and conference room video experiences that run over the Internet or wireless networks, are highly reliable and can seamlessly connect to our existing high-end video collaboration offerings."

Vidyo’s technology is able to optimize the user’s video experience to reduce latency with H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC), an adaptive codec that eliminates the need for multipoint control unit (MCU) and offers a more reliable video experience on best-effort networks. According to a report by technology analyst firm Gartner Inc. adaptive codecs provide "a more credible path" for high-quality videoconferencing to migrate more rapidly to the Internet.
According to a survey sponsored by conferencing and collaboration services provider InterCall and conducted independent research firm TNS, nearly one in two Americans (48 percent) who use technology in their everyday jobs say that they are now required to do more work with fewer resources due to the current economic climate. As an example, nearly one-third (30 percent) feel that they need to stay connected to work 24/7, even during weekends, breaks or holidays. However, 72 percent say that advanced technology, such as conferencing and collaboration tools, enables them to work faster, better and improves their morale.
