IT Services Factor Significantly in Tech Job Gains

By Michael Vizard

There are few better metrics of the overall health of the technology sector than its job growth. According to a new report from CompTIA, nearly 200,000 new U.S. tech jobs were created in 2015. More than 100,000 of those jobs were in the IT services sector, which includes consultants, integrators, resellers and managed service providers (MSPs). Fueling this employment growth is the emergence of the cloud, mobility, big data, automation, security and the Internet of things. "While these emerging technologies hold great promise for businesses across the U.S. economy … most will not be equipped to realize maximum benefits without assistance. The layer of technology firms known as the channel plays an integral role in facilitating the flow of technology goods and services from producer to customer," the report reads. The study also drives home the point that competition for IT talent is fierce. The number of tech job postings in 2015 was nearly 30 percent higher than it was in 2014. We examine key takeaways from the report.
