From the perspective of the average managed service provider (MSP), the quality of service being provided often directly corresponds to the amount of congestion on the networks that reside in and out of the enterprise. As such, the latest Cisco Visual Networking Index report may give MSPs cause to take a deep breath as not only the volume of data on the network increases, but so too does the number of sources of that traffic. In fact, the very nature of that traffic is going to look significantly different than it does today. The two biggest drivers of all this change will, of course, be mobile computing and the rise of the Internet of things (IoT). Most of that data will be traveling over networks owned by the major carriers, but a huge percentage of all that data, to one degree or another, is going to find its way into enterprise IT environments. Chances are that when it finally does hit, most IT organizations won't be prepared to handle it. Channel Insider looks at key takeaways from the Cisco study.
