Bull's Eye Awards: Deployment of the Year
Hotel Internet Service
As its name implies, Hotel Internet Services (HIS) is in the leisure business, providing secure wired and wireless Internet services, unattended business centers, kiosks and meeting and convention services for hotels, resorts, timeshares, casinos, and other venues.
Founded in 2003, HIS has offices in California, Florida and Nevada, but its winning deployment, in one of the 10 most haunted places in the world, was afloat. The historic cruise ship, Queen Mary, had big Wi-Fi problems. With myriad nooks and crannies, obstacles everywhere and thick metal walls, the ship’s construction and configuration, until recently, made it next to impossible to get Wi-Fi working properly. Installing hundreds of access points would have solved the problem but the cost was prohibitive so HIS had to come up with another solution.
HIS deployed its Ruckus Wireless Smart Wi-Fi solution, which features miniaturized smart antenna arrays and dynamic beamforming technology, which apparently did the trick. The proof is in the pudding too: Within two weeks of installing the system, the ship staff reported doubling the average broadband service revenue it took in from passengers – without advertising the new and improved Wi-Fi. Seems a few satisfied users spread the word and more logged on.
