Re-Imagining Linux Platforms to Meet the Needs of Cloud Service Providers
The new platform combines Data ONTAP 7G, with its enterprise capabilities, and Data ONTAP GX, a clustered version with great scalability.NetApp has unveiled Data ONTAP 8, the latest version of its platform now specifically designed for a model of IT delivered as a service (ITaaS) that will serve as the cloud infrastructure.
"This is the next step in the evolution of a trend in virtualization," said Patrick Rogers, VP Solutions Marketing at NetApp. "It began when grid computing began to evolve because of the impact of hypervisors and virtualization, and two years ago, NetApp embarked on an ambitious plan of storage for virtualized environments. 40-50 percent of our engagements today are virtualized solutions. And the new phase is service-oriented virtualization -- the cloud."
Rogers emphasized that Data ONTAP is the foundation of everything NetApp does, and that this is a major revision of the platform. Previously, NetApp had two separate platforms, Data ONTAP 7G, with its enterprise capabilities, and Data ONTAP GX, a clustered version with great scalability.
