Flag of the Red Cross

Talk of supply chain disruptions and interruption in chip production almost seem superfluous when you look at some of the footage of the loss of life, human suffering and catastrophic damage wreaked by the earthquake, tsunami and now nuclear crisis in Japan. First things first.

But here’s something you can do at the same time you conduct your business. D&H Distributing will donate 1 percent of U.S. and Canadian sales from products by Japanese-based vendors to the American Red Cross to help with relief efforts in Japan following the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami there, the company announced.

But if you are planning to buy to help the effort, hurry up. The special donation program will only run on sales executed Thursday and Friday, March 17 and 18.

The amount of the donation is expected to reach tens of thousands of dollars, based on average sales, according to D&H. Vendors include Brother, Buffalo, Canon, Casio, Epson, Fuji, JVC, Konica, Nikon, Nintendo, Olympus, Optoma, Panasonic, Ricoh, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba, Yamaha and more.

“D&H has maintained close, often decades-long relationships with a roster of manufacturers headquartered in Japan, which has made both the executives and the staff very sensitive to the challenges faced by that country in the wake of these events,” the company said in a statement.  “D&H personnel also plan to devote the efforts of ‘D&H Cares,’ the company’s employee-run charity foundation, to Japanese relief funds as a supplement to the distributor’s corporate contribution.

Executives at the Harrisburg, Pa.-based distributor expressed great appreciation for the contribution of Japanese companies to the technology industry.

“We are dedicated to seeing the success of Japan as it rebuilds its homes and facilities.  Their contribution to the high-tech industries has been immeasurable,” said Dan Schwab, co-president at D&H Distributing.

Separately, D&H noted that independent contributions can be made to the American Red Cross here.
