    New Data Center Infrastructure Approaches
    2009-10-27 13:22:08
Many organizations are doing all they can to reduce the number of small or remote data centers that need to be supported. However, in some cases these cannot be consolidated into larger data centers or centralized data centers. So how can you reduce the costs of these satellite facilities? One of the key ways to do this is to move from unique and proprietary data center physical infrastructure to standardized products. This approach provides key benefits that will save you money.

Dell Speeds Up ROI for Enterprise
    2009-07-07 16:19:02
Dell has announced sweeping additions to its virtualization solutions suite, paying particular attention to accelerating the delivery of benefits to its corporate clientele. In an interview with Ziff-Davis Enterprise Contributing Editor Steve Kovsky, Dell Solutions Director Anthony Dina explains that in the past, customers were frustrated by the length of time it took for a new technology investment to pay for itself. Dell’s new approach emphasizes quicker returns and better measurement of each customer’s ROI. "There’s a lag time between when a person decides they want to get after the advantage, and when they actually get the advantage, so with this announcement, we put a lot of effort into what we call ‘the fast track to efficiency’," Dina said. That fast-track approach calls for a combination of pre-configured hardware and software packages, bundled with advisory and consulting services that are designed to let companies plan, deploy and manage their server virtualization investment with a minimum of downtime or delay.

New Tools for Measuring Data Center Power Efficiency
    2009-05-29 11:54:48
Measuring data center power efficiency is a critical aspect of understanding Green Computing and your ability to run a Green Data Center. There are three new tools for measuring the efficiency of how much power you use, and how much is actually being driven to the IT hardware, and not used for other tasks. Power Utilization Efficiency (PUE), Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency (DCiE), and SI-POM are the most common ways to ascertain the metrics concerning how much power used in the data center is being used to power IT hardware, and how much is used for other tasks. The highly efficient data center cannot be run without these kinds of metrics that show actual usage levels and changes in how power is used.

The Efficiency Multiplier Actual Data Center Power Use
    2009-05-29 11:47:59
Data center power efficiency is essential to running an efficient and Green Computing environment. Too often, there is no holistic view of IT Power Utilization that takes into account all the aspects that use electricity. This video discusses the "power multiplier" effect that details how for every watt of power provided to IT hardware, as many as 2.5 watts of electricity are used for other aspects. IT strategies such as virtualization, consolidation and even Cloud computing will help reduce the multiplier effect, but it’s also necessary to look at UPS, power distribution (PDUs), and cooling options and strategies to drive power efficiency in the data center.

    The Data Center Planning Process
    2009-05-12 16:41:14
The importance of data center planning and the use of best practices cannot be underestimated. The key to a better approach is to take a comprehensive approach so that power consumption, power distribution, cooling and wiring are all considered. Developing a clear assessment of your needs, whether it is 24x7 or "five nines" or a lower level of reliability will impact all of your decisions as well. It’s not just about a green data center, but a data center with a long life span that is a highly efficient data center.
