Symantec Unveils Deduplication StrategyBy eChannelLine | Posted 2009-07-08 Email Print
Company plans to deliver solutions over the next year as well as several updates and enhancements to its flagship backup and recovery solution NetBackup.
Symantec Corp. announced its deduplication strategy with plans to deliver on it over the next year as well as several updates and enhancements to its flagship backup and recovery solution NetBackup.
With data volumes increasing daily, companies need a better way to balance backup storage costs with business needs for rapid and reliable data recovery. By using deduplication, IT managers and storage professionals can increase utilization of their existing disk, tape, and server resources, reducing backup storage by 10 to 50 times, and restoring critical data and applications faster, the vendor said.
"There's a much broader opportunity to more fundamentally change the backup and archive applications and processes around dedupe," said Matthew Kixmoeller, senior director, product marketing for NetBackup at Symantec. "We're seeing an obesity problem around data right now. It's been exacerbated by the combination of data growth and the economy . . . people are feeling the squeeze between meeting data storage objectives with a lower budget."
