Demise Prediction Rate: 20%
January 2009 Market Cap: $4.96 billion
December 2009 Market Cap: $6.46 billion

McAfee is a vendor that has appeared in a number of death pools over the past five years. It may be the world’s largest pure-play security vendor, but it’s still a distant second to Symantec. Rumors have persisted that McAfee has tried selling to Cisco, HP, Microsoft and even EMC. That chatter stopped though last spring when McAfee changed its tune and started positioning itself for growth. McAfee is now focused on getting bigger rather than selling out.
