9. Unified Communications Gets Real
Unified communications—the long-promised dream of converged digital, voice and video communications—isn’t quite here yet, but it’s getting close. As the hassle and cost of travel continues to rise and the need for greater collaboration increases, businesses are turning to unified communications as the alternative to disjointed e-mail and conference calls, as well as means to eliminate travel. The bigger driver, though, is the rise of social networking and microblogging. Unified communications systems are incorporating many features that look and feel like Twitter and Facebook feeds. Many analysts will point to video as a driving force, but the real magic behind unified communications is real-time document sharing and collaboration tools that made disparate workgroups more efficient.
