The Trouble with Spam

Spam and phishing attackers are getting more sophisticated, launching bigger mass attacks on just a few online payment brands in order to dupe online users into giving away account details. Symantec’s April 2010 State of Spam and Phishing report looks at the attacks targeting your customers. Here’s a look at the trend and where your users are vulnerable.

The Trouble with Spam

Spam clogs your users’ email inboxes, makes them less productive, and drags down the performance of your networking and email server. And worse still, your users are the target scam artists and phishing attacks that threaten their financial information and more. Here’s a look at the state of spam and the scams that come with it today.

The Spam Count

Spam made up 89.34 percent of all email messages sent in March 2010.That's a slight decrease compared to 89.99 percent in February.

Clogging Your Mail Server

Spam messages between 5k and 10k increased by 10 percentage points, likely as a result of an increase in attachment spam.

Duping Your Users

Scam and phishing messages in March 2010 made up 17 percent of all spam.

The Good News Part

Phishing attacks went down by 3 percent in March compared to February.The slight dip was due to a decrease in volume of attacks generated by automated toolkits--these attacks went down by 35 percent in the past month.

The Bad News Part

At the same time, though, unique URL and IP attacks increased by 1.5 percent and 4 percent respectively.

Targeting the Big Phish

A mass phishing attack on two unnamed but major brands that offer retail electronic payment services for worldwide banks made up a sizeable 4.4 percent of all unique phishing websites in March 2010.

Big Verticals for Phishing Scams

82 percent of all phishing scams targeted financial sectors.17 percent targeted information services.

Less Popular Verticals

Less than 1 percent targeted government sectors and less than one percent targeted other sectors such as healthcare, insurance and telecommunications.
