Cynics, put this research in your pipes and smoke it: according to a new study out from Webroot, three quarters of employees really do try their best to adhere to company IT security policies. So those slackers out there who have eschewed the development of a comprehensive security policy document because 'they'll only try to get around it anyway' may need to find another excuse or just get with the program. The survey was conducted among 2,500 workers in the U.S., Australia and U.K. Here’s a closer look at what they said.

Only about 25 percent of employees have tried to bypass company security policies while at work.
95 percent of these employees respect the importance of their employers' measures to protect their IT assets.
89 percent of employees think that security policies help with the prevention of virus infections on company gear.
83 percent understand that policies help protect customer information and company data.
61 percent reported that company security policies rarely or never make it more difficult for them to do their jobs.
26 percent of respondents were aware of someone who received a warning as a result of breaking security policies.
18 percent were aware of someone who was fired.
9 percent know someone whose computer privileges were reduced.
8 percent know someone who was put on probation.
75 percent of employees believe security policies are, nevertheless, a necessary evil.
Only about 7 percent of employees expressed extreme concern that their employers monitor their online activities.
Around 84 percent of organizations require a login password for company computers and 55 percent restrict the types of programs their employees can download.
But just 37 percent of organizations have policies restricting access to the network outside the office and a small 20 percent require two-factor authentication for network or computer access.
