As hospitals rush to implement EHRs in order to better serve patients and win some stimulus funds from the federal government in the process, they'll need to increase their information security defenses in the process. According to a recent survey by HIMSS, the healthcare industry is struggling to keep up with security as it is. More records and more informatics collaboration will only make the situation more complicated. Here's a look at the state of security at healthcare organizations.

Only four percent of respondents indicated that they don’t have any concerns about thesecurity of electronic medical information at their organization
Approximately 26 percent of organizations reported experiencing a security breach in the last 12 months.
That's slightly up from the 23 percent of respondents that participated in last year's HIMSS survey.
Just 15 percent of organizations said that security systems are a primary IT infrastructure focus for their hospitals.
Internal breaches were listed as the primary security concern for electronic medical information, listed by 36 percent of respondents.
Approximately 30 percent of organizations said that compliance with HIPAA security regulations and CMS security audits was their biggest security concern.
Other big security issues reported by respondents were data leakage (16 percent) and external breaches (11 percent).
