Security: Security Spending, Priorities Remain Stable

Several security vendors and professional groups released new security survey reports revealing that security budgets are under pressure, but priorities and spending are relatively stable.
 
  • The annual RSA Conference saw the release of several new reports on security spending, priorities and activities. The following is a sampling of data from various security surveys.
  • 22% of enterprises have deployed application firewalls; 31% plan to purchase application firewalls
  • 29% of enterprises are using data loss prevention technology; 37%plan to purchase application firewalls
  • 29% of enterprises are very concerned about virtualization security; 53%are very concerned about the security of cloud computing
  • 70% of computer users are concerned about cybercrime;65% believe local government needs to do more to stop cybercrime
  • 45% of businesses plan to virtualize at least one-third of their servers
  • 42% of businesses say unauthorized virtualized environment are their biggest virtual security threat
  • 72% have no plans to plans to deploy virtual firewalls; 64% do not believe virtual firewalls will gain acceptance for two to three years
  • 57% of common Web applications using Ports 80 or 445 can bypass conventional firewalls and other security measures
  • 70% of businesses have downsized their IT departments this year
  • 58% of businesses are concerned about browser-based attacks; 30% of businesses are concerned about social network attacks
  • 72% of security vendors are discounting new product purchases; 53%have reduced maintenance fees
  • 70% of security professionals had their budgets cut; 55% expect no further budget cuts this year
  • 66% of businesses expect their investment to remain constant through 2009
