7 New Security Products That Benefit the Channel

By Ericka Chickowski on 2010-03-10

Last week's annual security confab at the RSA Conference was abuzz with new releases from the security vendor community. Channel Insider cuts through all of the announcements to give our assessment of some of the most impactful product releases for the channel.

  • of
PGP Key Management Server

Introduced a few days before the show, PGP's Key Management Server offers greater interoperability with third-party encryption solutions. The updated solution adds support for heterogenous environments, with support for devices, desktops and servers and multi-protocol support, plus out-of-the box provisioning for numerous certificate types.

Channel Benefits: The new capabilities give the channel the means to help customers tie together encryption threads into one sensible platform.

Symantec Brightmail 9.0 Small Business Edition

With its latest Brightmail release, Symantec is offering a new version for SMBs that offers the full feature set of the enterprise version with the competitive pricing and licensing necessary to make the product tenable in smaller environments.

Channel Benefits: In the past Brightmail required two or more SKUs to roll out into SMB environments, making it a nightmare for the channel to sell. Symantec rolled it out on a single SKU this time , greatly simplified the licensing and dropped the price to help resellers make the sale.

Cisco Secure Borderless Network

This new secure wireless architecture is designed to offer seamless mobility--Cisco's mantra is to offer secure connectivity on any device, at any location and at any time. The architecture is composed of two major components: Cisco's AnyConnect Secure Mobility suite with endpoint management, web security gateway and firewall technology, plus Cisco's TrustSec policy-based access control.

Channel Benefits: Because the model is based on a recurring revenue model, Cisco believes it offers a lot of profitability to the channel.

Fortinet FortiAP

Fortinet charged toward the wireless LAN market with the introduction of two new enterprise-class thin access point products, FortiAP-210 and FortiAP-220, each designed to work together with the company's flagship FortiGate UTMs.

Channel Benefits: The new devices will enable channel partners to get customers up and running with a scalable wireless infrastructure that can reach up into the thousands of access points while still maintaining their security standards.

Cenzic Hailstorm

The newest update to Cenzic's web application vulnerability assessment platform, Hailstorm 6.5, adds better integration with enterprise applications through a new open API, improved webcrawling functionality, better under-the-hood features such as asyncronous engines and logging improvements, plus a better user interface.

Channel Benefits: Web application vulnerability assessment suites such as these present consulting partners significant opportunity to add tremendous value by layering analysis and mitigation services on top of the product.

Lumension Endpoint Management and Security Suite

Another pre-show release, this latest consolidated endpoint offering by Lumension rolls out what the company is dubbing 'Intelligent Whitelisting,' combining the power of whitelisting with Lumension's own brand of antivirus technology and centering it around a rules-based trust engine that better controls endpoint change.

Channel Benefits: Rather than get caught up in a debate with customers over blacklisting vs. whitelisting, resellers can offer a single product that does both. The consolidation within the product also helps partners reduce the number of agents they need to place on customer machines.

ArcSight Express

ArcSight updated its simplified line of security information and event management appliances at the show this year. Meant to consolidate security event correlation, log management, IT search, and NetFlow monitoring in to one box, ArcSight Express added rules-based response to improve the time between detection and response.

Channel Benefits: Though ArcSight is regarded as one of the best in SIEM, it also has a reputation for complex and pricey offerings . This release offers resellers greater flexibility and simplicity when selling customers ArcSight products into customer environments.
