6 Tips to Keep Data Secure The data security breach at Heartland Payment Systems underscores the need for robust and constant security measures. Rob Fitzgerald, founder of the Lorenzi Group, offers these six tips for solution providers to help keep their customers' data secure.
Data Security Education It's the easiest thing to do and one that will get solution providers in the door to capture more business. School employees on what they should and should not do, as well as what to do when they notice a security breach or when "something's just not right."
Audit Security Policies Review such information as who has access to which programs and why they have access to specific types of data. If they don't need access, get them off the list.
Implement Network Monitoring Track and monitor all inbound and outbound network traffic, analyze where it’s going and identify where and why it goes where it does. Proactively find the leaks and plug them.
Encrypt Data In particular for mobile employees, make sure data is encrypted from the network level down to the desktop to thwart network-based intrusions and malware as well as accidental and malicious data theft on laptop and PDA.
Test Database Security Establish a baseline of performance and use it to measure the security. If a database is misbehaving at the server level, the baseline of performance will help identify anomalies, the network monitoring system will help track the behavior, and the educated employees will be able to report it.
Update Software (Security and Applications) A no-brainer, but oftentimes overlooked. Update and install the latest security applications to protect data, as well as upgrade and patch productivity applications and operating systems.
